Young@Heart Luncheon–David Harney

We had an outstanding vocal concert today for our Luncheon program by Dave Harney. He is always one of our favorite singers. If I delay using him, I always get someone asking when he will return. We’ve used him every year that I’ve been involved with Young at Heart and many more before. He has a great singing voice and also a fantastic testimony that he is quick to share.

Prior to having Dave sing, we enjoyed piano music for our Prelude time by Fred Scheffler and Nathan Brandt. Listen HERE!

David shared a very good selection of gospel music along with his stories, and jokes. The music and his stories are truly inspirational while the jokes are entertaining and give most of us a good laugh. As you know, I love a good laugh!

We also enjoyed a great meal served by Lisa and our volunteers! The tables were set with a St. Patrick’s Day theme.  Ask me about the photo of Nancy and I with the little and big green hats. You won’t see them here!

Young@Heart Luncheon Program–February 11

This month we enjoyed a nice financial update program put on by our own Greg Poe, Vice President at Fifth Third Bank. We have regularly enjoyed having Greg and several of the other Fifth Third employees serve at our luncheons. This was a service project for the bank. Greg has been promoted, so this nice benefit may need to be stopped.

Greg did a very nice job informing us about the current and projected financial outlook. You can hear it HERE and also see his PowerPoint presentation material, HERE.

We also enjoyed a nice selection of organ music by Nancy Jensen for our Prelude “Early Bird” time.

Then, we put Lisa and her team of merry cooks and servers to work. They served an excellent luncheon of Chicken Pot Pie Soup and a Salad alone with Cherry Pie. I know many of you commented on how good the soup was and asked for the recipe. So we will put that in a future newsletter along with some other favorites. We are always so happy to have Lisa and the team prepare home cooked meals and serve.

Next month, we will enjoy music by our old friend, Dave Harney!

Young@Heart Luncheon Program–January 14, 2014

This week we had the first of our Young@Heart Luncheons for 2014, also since our November luncheon. The December Luncheon was cancelled because of bad weather.

We enjoyed a great Piano Concert by Fred Scheffler and two of his piano students, Lexi Harbaugh and Nathan Brandt. Fred started by doing our prelude time prior to the actual program.

After our normal program stuff of acknowledgements, jokes and announcements, we featured a two part Piano program. Part 1 included piano solos by both Lexi and Nathan followed by a duet with the two of them. We had some outstanding comments by our people on their performances. Well done Lexi and Nathan!

Following Part 1, Part 2 included a nice devotional presentation written by Fred’s daughter, Julie Ruegsegger, and read by Lexi and Nathan with Fred playing piano. As they read the script, photos were shown to enhance the readings. The photo below shows Lexi reading while there is a Christmas theme on the screens behind. Nathan also did a couple of readings.

After the program, we enjoyed a nice meal prepared and served by Lisa and the volunteers. Pastor Rich McGhee surprised us by presenting Belated Christmas gifts for Lisa, Nancy and myself. Thank you all, this was a real surprise!

LaComedia–December 20

Our December Day Trip for Young@Heart is often at LaComedia for several reasons. 1) They provide excellent Christmas entertainment 2) It is convenient enough that we don’t often have to be concerned about a snow day 3) Everyone enjoys the programs at LaComedia and these are generally our best attended Day Trips 4) the food is good!

I believe our total this month was about 30 people. Most of those rode down on the church bus but a few drove on their own.

Although LaComedia does not allow photography during the performances, we were able to take a few shots of our people before and after. I also added one performance photo from their Facebook page.

There were two parts of the performance; maybe even two entirely different performances. The first part was a children’s story about believing in Santa. The music was good and performances by the children and chorus line were good. I think Kids would have loved this part. The photo below is from this part of the program and appears on the LaComedia Facebook page.

The second part/performance was the “True Meaning of Christmas” and focused on the birth of Christ as told in Mathew and Luke. This ended with an awesome solo, “Oh Holy Night”.

After the show, there is always a lineup of the performers to greet and shake hand or congratulate. I thought I took several photos but the one below is the only one that came out of my camera!  I also shot photos of the kids and the soloist. Sorry that I cannot show them here!

Young@Heart Day Trip–November 19,2013

This month we enjoyed our “Annual Mystery Trip”. I promised everyone that we’d see something older than us and have a delicious meal! We certainly did that and I think everyone enjoyed the trip.

First, we visited the Cincinnati Museum Center to enjoy the Dinosaurs Exhibit. Generally, I prefer the Creation Museum for Dinosaurs, but found this exhibit very interesting and informative, after I learned to overlook all the mentions of “Millions of Years”. There were lots of exhibits of actual fossils and many recreations of the skeletons.

We arrived a little early to allow for a break, then began our tour at 10am. We toured the exhibits and some even had time for a coffee break until noon.

At noon, we departed from the Museum Center for Grand Finale. This is a favorite eatery for Nancy and I. They specialize to good food and the “Finale” is always outstanding!  Of course, this is one of their many famous and delicious desserts.

Interestingly, we spent as much time, maybe a little more, at the restaurant as we did at the museum. We had excellent and fun service. The only complaint is their skimpy parking. But our driver, Andrew Roberts, was able to get our bus in the lot and out again, later.  I think everyone truly enjoyed this Mystery Day Trip.

Young @ Heart Program–November 12, 2013

We had a great program this month for Young at Heart. Great music, fun times, good music and our Thanksgiving Turkey.

To start, Grace Averitt played a nice selection of music, appropriate for this season, on the Piano. Grace is our regular Sunday Morning Pianist and plays for the worship services and for the choir.  You can hear most of the piano music HERE!

After this we did our normal opening program including a couple of very nice solos, sung by Hadley Gammie.

We were pleased to hear from our Lead Pastor (AKA, Senior Pastor) David Kisner. He brought us a very nice devotional about How we as Seniors can Finish Well. His message is available at this Link.

This was followed by a fantastic Thanksgiving Meal in the dining area provided by our kitchen staff and served by a number of volunteers, including those from 5/3 Bank.

Our December Christmas program is going to be a very special musical and drama program. Nancy and Mark & Grace Averitt are planning this with the help of Marlene Williams for the drama. You will not want to miss this fun musical program. Bring friends, too. Of course, we will also have an appropriate meal for the Christmas Season.

Glorious Day–Young@Heart Luncheon

I always look forward to our luncheon programs because I am excited to see how God works things out. It is certainly not of my doing. I am especially happy with the program today, in all aspects!  We had a great time talking with each other, hearing from Buckeye Home Health Care, and ultimately hearing from the Glorious Day Quartet.

After our time of announcements, etc., we heard from Jeremy Collier about Buckeye Home Health Care. Jeremy is someone who I’ve known since he was a child and is now grown up as the Vice President of Business and Development for Buckeye Home Health Care. Buckeye provide home health care services that allow people to continue longer in their homes without the need to move into a nursing home. We are old friends with this company through many contacts; they provided an exercise class for us, made presentations about Medicare, etc. On a more personal basis, they are still caring for my mom who is now 94 years old and still able to care for herself in her own apartment. There are many companies who provide comparable services. We have a number of their brochures in our information rack in the Library. Check them out and take a careful look at each of the options. Next, we heard a great gospel musical program from Glorious Day Gospel Quartet. This group is lead by another old friend, Jim Landers.  I was impressed by their voices and God given talents.
