Bear Creek Farms Day Trip, June 17, 2008

We all enjoyed the experience at Bear Creek Farms. This is my first experience there and I was impressed with the quality of the food, the entertainment, and the surrounding facilities.

The first set of photos is of the surrounding area in Bear Creek Farms. There were a good number of buildings to explore. Unfortunately, we did not have time to do any fishing. As you can see here, I love to include photos of the individuals in our group.

The following photos are taken in the theater of our group and the orchestra and singers.

I recorded a few of the pieces by the orchestra. These are certainly not CD quality but do show the excellent sound of this group. You can enjoy them HERE and HERE!

June YAH Luncheon Notes

Our June Young at Heart Luncheon was a good one.

Nancy played the organ again for our opener but this time she played all gospel music. Last month she played mostly popular secular music.

Of course, I told a few JOKES. I know, I KNOW; you all think I’m the joke.

Chris Thompson also provided a very nice solo.

Dennis Sullivan was our special speaker for this month. Dennis is currently a professor at Cedarville University in their Biology Department and specializes in Bio-Ethics. His past is very interesting. He is a physician and a missionary doctor in Haiti and later in the Central African Republic (CAR). Recently Dennis has been testifying in the Ohio Senate on Embryonic Cloning. You can hear what he had to say at our luncheon meeting HERE!

Check back here later this month for some photos of the Bear Creek Day Trip. I will also post clear instructions on the parking as our construction starts. One more thing about that: please do not let this construction process scare you away from participating in our luncheons or day trips. We will have everything clearly marked or have people directing you for parking. Parking will not be an issue. It just may be a little different for you.

June Newsletter Added

I added the June Newsletter (see the right panel). This is in a portable document format (PDF). Most computers would already have the ability to read these files. I believe the newsletter will also be in the mail in the next day or two.

I was not able to participate in the Kentucky Horse Farm trip this month because all of our pastor staff were in the Moody Pastors' Conference in Chicago. If anyone took photos, please send them to me and I will be happy to post some here.

Reds Game, April 24th

April 24, 2008 we took a bus down to Cincinnati to enjoy a Red's game against Houston. We had good seats that did not require a lot of walking up and down stairs to reach. We even had a covering above our heads in case it rained and to keep the sun off of our heads. The weather cooperated and neither of these issues was a problem.

I always enjoy our day trips; more because of getting to know a good bunch of people than for what we see or do. This trip to Cincinnati was a good example of good fellowship, even though the game results weren't that great.

We had a good group of our Young at Heart people plus several missionaries go along with us for this day trip.

This is Todd and Dawn and their two children. They are missionaries and participated in our special mission emphasis seniors luncheon last week. We invited them along to give the kids a taste of American Baseball. Unfortunately, the Reds lost to Houston but it was a fun day and great seats, too.

Of course, the kids all enjoy the team mascots!

Young at Heart Program - April 8, 2008

We had a great program today for our Young at Heart. I am always happy to see so many old faces but this time we also had about 6 first time visitors. I know some of these will be with us again.

Jim Weiss provided some very nice and soothing piano music during the prelude time of our program. This was a very nice variety of Classical, Pop and Spiritual music. Thank you Jim.

Joshua Hales provided a solo prior to our speaker of the day. This was recorded and can be heard again right HERE! Josh is our Pastor for Childrens Ministries here at WHBC.

Our special guest speaker of the day was David Darkow. David was with the Social Security Administration for a number of years before taking an early retirement. Then he started his own consulting company to help future retirees from corporations and government facilities all over the USA. He spoke to us about Security and Scams aimed at people like us. For example, he asked the question about why so many of these frauds and scams are aimed at us and gave the following:

1. We have more Wealth than any age group
2. We have little experience with fraud, especially “on-line” fraud
3. We spend 19% more time “on-line than any age group
4. Seniors make a lousy Witness in court
5. Seniors too proud to report being a Victim

Satan’s Fraud

The greatest fraud we must be aware of is when someone tells us we gain salvation and our place in heaven merely by doing good works.

The Bible tells us in Ephesians 2:8-9 (King James Version)
For by grace are ye saved through faith;
and that not of yourselves:
it is the gift of God:
Not of works, lest any man should boast.

If you have been taken by this “fraud” and want real assurance of your salvation and place in heaven, please talk with me or any of our pastoral staff here at Washington Heights.

April Day Trip to See the Cincinnati Reds Play Houston (April 24)

Remember our trip this month is a nice opportunity to see the Reds in action! We will see those of you who have paid reservations that morning at 10:45!

March 28 at the Cedarville University Pops Concert

We had a very nice time at the Cedarville Pops Concert last night. The performance was outstanding with a nice variety of music including instrumentals and singing. Some of the styles were whimsical and others were popular hits with plenty of good jazz thrown in for good measure. I think everyone enjoyed the concert. The time of fellowship over a nice meal in the cafeteria was the perfect way to start the evening.

Be sure to join us at our April 8th Luncheon at Washington Heights. We will have a special speaker tell us about fraud protection. I know this will be an informative and entertaining program. We will also be entertained by the piano music of Jim Weiss for our time before the meeting and Josh Hales will minister to us with a vocal solo or two. You won't want to miss this luncheon.

April 24th we will have a day trip and join the Cincinnati Reds in their stadium for a game against Houston. Plan to sign up for this one at the luncheon, if you haven't already done so.

More Economic Stimulus Payment Information

I posted some information last week to show that most retired people should be sure to file their income taxes to get the Economic Stimulus payments. The IRS and also Kiplinger (the tax people) have provided calculators on the Internet to help you know how much you can expect to receive. I prefer the way Kiplinger did their calculator since it is easier to understand. This is sufficient for about 99 percent of us. Just click the links to find the calculators and schedule.

If you prefer, you can use a calculator provided by the IRS. This is certainly more complex, but I believe it is more accurate for certain people, too.

Both of these are just estimates, so don't go spending the money until you have it in your hands.

Now, maybe you want to know when you will get these payments. The IRS is the best place to go for this information. First, the payments are made based on the last two digits of your SS #. Actually, if you file a joint tax return the first number of the two SS #s is used.
