YAH Purpose

The Young at Heart Ministry is for Senior Adults (those past retirement age) in the Dayton, Ohio area. We provide times of fellowship and entertainment during our monthly Luncheons. We also provide the opportunity to see interesting places and things around the area during our monthly Day Trips. Once a year (sometimes more frequently) we offer a longer trip to see areas far from Dayton. All of our programs are designed to be honoring to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Carillon Brass Concert - December 13, 2016

MERRY CHRISTMAS!

We had an awesome Christmas Luncheon Program and meal, in spite of the snow! Unfortunately, the weather did impact our numbers, so instead of a record turnout, we had about 100 brave soles. So, now all of the rest of you will have to make do with this blog!

To start, Grace Averitt played the Piano for our prelude. Grace will be leaving for Florida soon, so we are going to miss her around here for a couple of months.

Carillon Brass is a subset of the brass section of the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra. They regularly perform in schools to build an appreciation for music in our students. The Carillon Brass comprises five top musicians from the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra: Charles Pagnard, Principal Trumpet; Alan Siebert, Second Trumpet; Aaron Brant, Principal Horn; Chad Arnow, Trombone; and Tim Northcut, Principal Tuba. We were also pleased to have Claire Northcutt (Tim's 14 year old daughter) sing for us.

They performed a very good selection of Christmas music, some familiar and some not. Actually, they have a way of making some familiar music sound unfamiliar!  LOL (I mean that in a good way, of course)

You can enjoy the entire music program HERE,

Thank you Carillon Brass for a fantastic Christmas Concert!

After the concert, we adjourned to the gymnasium for our Christmas meal. Lisa and her staff of volunteers prepared and served a very good Christmas meal of Ham, Sweet Potato Casserole, Baked Apples and Cheese Cake!

We will not have another Luncheon Program until March 14, when our old friend Dave Harney will sing for us. So, Happy New Year!  And keep warm and dry,

Young@Heart Luncheon Program – November 8, 2016

Our luncheon program started with nice prelude piano music by Judy Comer. This is the first time that we've used Judy but I promise to ask her again. Thank you Judy for the nice background music as we visited.

Following our acknowledgements and announcements, we enjoyed some more great music by a ladies’ trio from Washington Heights Church. This trio consisted of Grace Averitt, Nancy Jensen and Annie Orme.

They sang two numbers; "Lord You are My Everything" and "We are So Blessed". What a great way to introduce our Thanksgiving program and Luncheon. You can see a couple of incomplete video clips below or listen to the music in much better sound HERE. It's my fault for the poor-quality sound of the videos. I was using a new phone and apparently covered one of the microphones, I also erred in starting the first one and inadvertently clicked the stop button during the second one. Don’t waste time searching for the errors but listen to the audio file for a better listening experience.
Lord You are My Everything

We are So Blessed

Following the music, we introduced our Lead Pastor, David Kisner. Dave is my boss and preaches and teaches in our Sunday Morning Services. He has been in our pulpit now for over 20 years and we love him. Today, he spoke on a topic of particular interest to those of us who are senior citizens. This was informative and I found it helpful and interesting. You can listen to his talk HERE.

As always, our kitchen volunteers and Lisa prepared an outstanding Thanksgiving meal. I think this one is worthy of a place in one of our future newsletters. It would be a great way to make good use of Thanksgiving Dinner leftovers.

Next month, be sure to join us for another terrific musical performance, as we celebrate Christmas with the Carillon Brass. You won't find a better brass musical group in our area. All five of these men are performers with the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra. They will also be performing downtown at the Victoria Theatre Loft; but you can avoid the crowded conditions of the theater and parking issues by hearing them here. So, JOIN US DECEMBER 13 at 11AM.

Young@Heart Luncheon – October 11, 2016

This week, we had a great musical program. We began with Toni Crouch Smith playing the piano for our prelude time of fellowship, prior to the program. Listen to the prelude Piano Music, HERE. Later, Toni accompanied Robert Rhodes as he sang a wide variety of musical pieces.

Robert is our Pastor of Worship Arts. That is the big name for leading the praise singing part of our services, choir, band, orchestra, etc. Robert has been with us a few months and is fitting in very well. He rarely sings solos for our services, but he did a very good job with the music for this program. His range of music is very broad from classical, Broadway, and Popular to Country and Contemporary Worship!

Robert led us through the program by playing a little quiz game of “Who and What am I?” with us.

You can hear Robert's entire program HERE. Or watch a few YouTube video clips below. Incidentally, the audio for his entire program is far superior to what is in the Videos. So, for your best listening pleasure, listen to the audio HERE.

After the program we moved into the dining area for another one of Lisa’s very good meals (they’re all great!). We had fruit salad, Mexican chicken, and Peach Cobbler for dessert.

Scioto Hills - Seasoned Saints - Day Trip

Today, we enjoyed a nice trip to God's Country in South Central Ohio. Scioto Hills is a children's campground during the summer months but hosts a number of other events including this Seasoned Saints during the off-times.

Driving to Scioto Hills is a bit of a hike but well worth the drive, at least when someone else is doing the driving. Thanks to Al Brothers for doing this for us. Someone asked me what town the camp is near; answer - Scioto Furnace. That's not much help, I'm sure!
There was at least a little color

The program consisted of a nice meal (chunky tomato soup and turkey croissant with chips followed by a delicious oatmeal bar), Scioto Hills property update by Scott Bruns (they are purchasing more property to give them better highway access), and a musical program by GloryWay Quartet.

I have the recipe for the Chunky Tomato Soup which was excellent! I'll share that in a future newsletter.
Lunch Time!

GloryWay Quartet is a group headquartered out of Mansfield, Ohio. One of the singers is from Bellbrook. He is Justin Sayger the Bass. He is really BASE, too! Two others are from Ohio and the fourth is from Nashville. The group sings over 200 times a year and takes bookings all over the USA.

Lancaster Fall Trip - Day 4

It is had to believe that this trip is coming to a close! We started the day with a tour of the Landis Valley Museum and village and had lunch at the Shady Maple Smorgasbord.

We ended our day with a nice meal at Yoder's. This is a great Amish food emporium. If you got the idea that eating is a big part of our trips, RIGHT!

This is the last day for our group in Lancaster. Friday, we begin the long ride home. Fortunately, except for Greg and Lisa, we're leaving the Driving for Melanie! Greg and Lisa are returning a little earlier to have dinner with their son and his girlfriend.

I enjoyed traveling along with the group, even though we could not be there. Thanks to Lisa and Rick for providing some photos and to Greg for his words of wisdom!

The group will be back in Dayton, Friday evening.

Lancaster Fall Trip - Day 3

Wednesday, September 28 the group toured the Lancaster area and shopped a little, then saw the Sampson Show at the Sight and Sound Millennium Theatre. As Greg Poe reported, he literally "brought the house down!"

In addition to the show, the group toured the area and saw some of the Amish country and sampled their food.
Greg is having a serious discussion with Ben Swogger!

And it appears that Betsy is giving Lou a bit of advice as Madlyn and Ruth look on!

In Greg Poe's words, "Food everywhere....the Amish are very gracious and faithful to food provision! Praise God, NO "casualties" to report, only temporary gluttony, did I mention the food???"
"Our bus driver, Melanie, has kept us in stitches, so funny and doesn't allow anyone on the road to intimidate her!" (I don't know if she's reading a map or menu, in the photo below)
"We had a Q and A session on the bus this morning directed at Lisa and me... that was fun!"
"About to begin a somewhat rainy tour of the Landis Valley. After that? Well, a smorgasbord!!!"

2016 YAH Fall Trip - Philadelphia - DAY 2

Our days always start with a Continental Breakfast in the Abraham Lincoln Hotel. Once again, I want to thank Rick Bowersox for taking these photos and uploading them for me each evening. I know this makes his days a little longer and busier. Of course, thanks to Janice Bowersox as our nurse and to Greg and Lisa Poe as the group leaders. Our driver is Mel with the blond hair on the right.

All ABOARD!
During Day 2 we traveled to Philadelphia where the group went to the harbor to view some ships and  board the Spirit of Philadelphia for a cruise and  lunch aboard the ship. The harbor also had a number of other ships including the first warship made of all steel.

First, the Spirit of Philadelphia.
I am compelled to add the photo of the Tall Ship, just because I love these old ships.

Lou is enjoying a view of the Olympia, the first and oldest all steel warship.
Time to settle for a nice cruise and meal!

Remember, you can always enlarge the photo views by clicking them!

Following the cruise the group enjoyed some free time touring Historic Philadelphia on their own. Since all these photos are taken by Rick Bowersox, this represents his tour and others likely saw more or less.

There are a number of important sights to see in Philadelphia. Independence Hall and the Tomb of the Unknown Revolutionary War Soldier along with the Liberty Bell are a few of them.

Maybe someone will bring me samples from the Philadelphia Mint. This mint has moved three times as coinage requirements increased. So, obviously this isn't OLD.

Often, I think our country has forgotten our Religious Liberty!
It is good to see both of these items on display.

Following the tour, our group returned to Lancaster for nice meal at the Deluxe Diner. Each person had already pre-selected their choice of meal.
