YAH Purpose

The Young at Heart Ministry is for Senior Adults (those past retirement age) in the Dayton, Ohio area. We provide times of fellowship and entertainment during our monthly Luncheons. We also provide the opportunity to see interesting places and things around the area during our monthly Day Trips. Once a year (sometimes more frequently) we offer a longer trip to see areas far from Dayton. All of our programs are designed to be honoring to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Christmas Luncheon Program with Leslie Stratton–Harpist

Wow, just WOW! This program was absolutely outstanding. Leslie Stratton is the Principal Harpist with the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra. We enjoyed her Harp music once before, with our own Charlie Pagnard and his trumpet. She will also return in the spring with “Harps of Grace”. After hearing this, I am really looking forward the next harp performance! She will also be playing again this coming Sunday in our morning services at Washington Heights Baptist Church with a few other members of the orchestra.

Harp Christmas Music

I know some of you probably just want some CD quality Harp Music for playing during this season. So, here’s the entire Harp Music Program.

We finished our day with a very nice Christmas Meal, prepared by Lisa and her staff in the kitchen and dining room. We enjoyed a Christmas Ham, Green Bean Casserole, Fruit Salad and Peppermint Ice Cream with home made Chocolate Sauce.

Thanksgiving Luncheon Program

This month we enjoyed a great program featuring piano and organ music and our own Lead Pastor, David Kisner.

Grace Averitt and Nancy Jensen played a Piano and Organ duet for both the prelude time prior to our program and then a special number just prior to Pastor Kisner’s talk. The organ did not come through well because of the way we handle the piano and organ in our sound. The piano is amplified through the soundboard in the balcony and the organ has it’s own amplifier and speakers behind the platform. Hence, when recording, the organ does not pick up, unless we record from the room, instead of the board. I have done that with some programs, but there are problems with other sounds such as audience talking and other room noise coming through, too. Since, our purpose of the prelude is to provide background music while you visit with friends prior to the program, recording from the room has it’s problems.

Pastor David Kisner is our Lead Pastor. You will note, during his start, he discussed the age of our staff. That was because of the way I introduced him by emphasizing my title of Senior Adult Ministry Pastor. We’re adding more young guys and two of our other pastors recently retired. So, now I’m the old guy and Pastor Kisner is close behind in the number two (by age) position. The other two guys were older than David but younger than I.

All that to say, Pastor Kisner did not preach but told stories about how the Lord led him from politics into ministry. Initially, he thought he should go into politics. We here at Washington Heights are thankful that he was led to the ministry. You should listen to his program to understand all this.

Lisa and the kitchen staff prepared a Thanksgiving meal for us with Turkey Pot Pie, Sweet Potato Casserole, Cranberry Salad and Pumpkin Pie. I’ve asked Lisa to provide the recipes for our December Newsletter. I think the pot pie and fixings will be something nice to use for Christmas and for your Thanksgiving Leftovers.

Speaking of our Newsletters, watch them for announcements of upcoming programs and trips in 2016.

Next month, we will enjoy some great Christmas Music with Leslie Stratton and her harp. She played for us one other time with Charlie and his Trumpet, but this time it will be primarily Leslie. We will also be using Leslie and Charlie for a Christmas Musical in our church in December. So, you can have two opportunities to listen to some great music. Join us in December.

Metamora Train Day Trip

This was without a doubt our best attended Day Trip this year and perhaps, ever!

Today, we drove over to Connersville, Indiana in two buses and our car. We had a total of 50 people. At Connersville, we boarded the Whitewater Valley Railroad bound for Metamora, Indiana. Metamora is a historic pre-Civil War town. It sports many shops and eateries. And even has a working Grist Mill, Canal Boat, and the railroad.

Along the route one of the volunteer conductors gave a running account of our whereabouts and gave historical information about the train and the area that we travelled. In one area, we could see five modes of transportation merging in one place. There was the river that the Indians frequently used for travel via canoes; there was the Whitewater Canal used for transporting people and freight via the canal boats; there was the railroad, which used the tow paths for the canal as the rail bed; there was a highway for auto and truck traffic; and there was a grassy airplane runway for small aircraft landing and take-off.

Metamora-Oct2015-106Metamora-Oct2015-107Metamora-Oct2015-108

This was promoted as a Fall Color Tour. That was a bit of a stretch. We were about a week late for the best color. However, there was still some color and our people were busy taking photos (through dirty windows). It was nice seeing the river most of the way and crossing a number of bridges. There are also a number of old Canal Locks, although none of these are in operation. Some of the canal also still has water but could not be used for transportation because of the many fallen trees across the canal and also the non functioning locks. If we do this again, it would be best to leave a little earlier in the month.

Metamora-Oct2015-114

I think there were only three places in Metamora that are serving meals during this time of the week. I recommend using three of them; Smelly’s. Steeplechase, and The Farm House. Smelly’s is also a coffee house and gift shop. The Farm House is a B&B. There is another restaurant but I don’t recommend it. In addition there are candy shops and some that serve ice cream. So, there is a good variety of places to eat. None of them are big enough to handle our group, so we split up and moved to 4 of the restaurants. Nancy and I with several others chose to go the The Farm House and we got very good service and food. On a previous trip, recently, Nancy and I went to Smelly’s and also have very good service and sandwiches along with soup, while there.

Metamora-Oct2015-118Metamora-Oct2015-119

Steve, aka – Smelly, is a very personable proprietor and fun to visit with. Originally, they travelled with many of the craft shows and became known for their Disk Clocks and Smelly stuff. Eventually, they decided to make a shop their full time venture. There are a multitude of craft shops in Metamora and some of the ladies enjoyed going through those. But, one limitation of going via the train is that it only stays in Metamora for two hours. After taking time to eat, and perhaps take a Canal Boat ride, there isn’t much time for shopping. While at Smelly’s we bought a number of bags of their delicious Carmel Corn. He also specializes in a variety of cheese Panini sandwiches, homemade soups and chili. He even sells chili kits to make your own. We bought some the last time and it is very good. This time he also had some Beans and Ham with cornbread. I had to have some of that, even after a full meal with pie. I got a to-go container and finished it at home!

Metamora-Oct2015-117

Some of the people in our group wanted to enjoy a canal trip. So they took this canal boat for a ride down the canal and back. It is a pretty cool ride and I recommend it. Unfortunately, doing so takes some planning. We arrived by train at 11:30am, the boats run every hour on the hour, and the train leaves again at 1:30. Hence, the only reliable time to take the boat is at noon. We advised those who wished to take the boat to bring a lunch.

Metamora-Oct2015-115

This is the ice cream and cookie jar shop. They have one of the largest collections of cookie jars in the country.

Metamora-Oct2015-120

The train cars are actually old Interurban cars and ours was built in 1934! There are three means of heating the cars, people – stoves like this one – and a propane boiler a couple of cars along the way. It was chilly but not cold enough to add heat since we were all prepare with jackets, anyway. On the return trip to Connersville, we had to stop twice for fallen trees. The volunteers rush off the train with chain saws to get the trees out of the way. Cool, not a train wreck but a little extra excitement. They do also have occasional derailments but at only 15 MPH those aren’t bad and can often be readily corrected and the train continues on the way. We also saw the Elmhurst Mansion just before entering Connersville.

Metamora-Oct2015-122

The Elmhurst mansion at the south edge of Connersville, in Fayette County, Indiana, was home to political leaders, a station on the underground railroad, a sanatorium, an exclusive girls’ school, a military institute, and finally, a Masonic lodge.

The house was originally built in 1831 by pioneer statesman Oliver H. Smith, then a member of Congress from Indiana.

The second occupant of the house was another congressman, Caleb B. Smith, who later served as Secretary of the Interior during part of President Lincoln’s administration. The mansion was an important station of the pre-Civil War underground railway. The trail of the road by which escaped slaves were smuggled to freedom divided there at the Old Elm Farm, as the estate was then known.

A third congressman, Samuel W. Parker, acquired the mansion in 1850. He was a devout conservationist and is given credit for planting many of the trees that surround the house. After his return from Washington he became president of the Junction Railroad Company and the Whitewater Canal. He gave invaluable support to the career of Henry Clay, who was a visitor to the mansion. It is said that canal boats would ring their bells as they passed the mansion in honor of Parker.

The estate became the property of Senator James Nelson Huston (1849-1927) in 1881.

I would give a strong recommendation to doing this trip for anyone. Especially, those with kids interested in history. They have a number of fun excursions including shootouts, polar express and even a dinner ride. Check their schedules and programs on their website.

Stan The Magic Man–October 12, 2015

As we normally do, we started our program with prelude music prior the actual program. This week we had Fred Scheffler (a piano teacher) with Nathan Brandt (his student) play the piano. They each played a selection of music solo and also played a piano duet.

You can listen to a portion of their recital for this Young@Heart program HERE.

After our other opening program of jokes, birthdays and anniversaries, I publicized our upcoming Day Trips. Later this month we will enjoy a leisurely train ride from Connersville, IN to Metamora, IN. Then we’ll have lunch and explore this old pre-Civil War town. Some may also wish to ride the Canal Boat. If so, I suggested they pack a lunch because we will only be in Metamora for about two hours before the train leaves, again. This seems like it may be the most popular Day Trip during my tenure with Young at Heart! We will probably require all three busses!

Now, for our program – This month we enjoyed a fun Magic Program by Stan Goode. Stan is an old friend of our Young@Heart but hasn’t been with us for three of four years. Rumor has it that he did a disappearing act and hadn’t been seen for some time. Fortunately, we were able to contact him and bring him back. I was surprised at how many of our people invited their in-laws to join us! Do you think they were hoping that Stan would do his disappearing act, with them? Of course, I am only teasing; and Stan did a fun variety of illusions that we enjoyed.

StanTheMagicMan-105

StanTheMagicMan-113StanTheMagicMan-117

Stan performed a good number of illusions with cards, ropes, lights and even predicting what Stan #2 would put in the jar! He also did a nice tie-in with scripture on a couple of the illusions.

I hope everyone enjoyed having Stan the Magic Man return.

Following Stan, I did a very short devotional. Because of time limitation, I kept it purposely very short. Maybe, I can put the entire devotional that tied in with football, in one of our newsletters.

Undesputed

Of course, we had one of our own “Undisputed Good Meals” provided by Lisa and our kitchen and dining room volunteers!

Cedarville Play - "Father of the Bride" Day Trip

Thursday, October 8, we took a good size group of people to see the Cedarville University play, "Father of the Bride".

I wasn't allowed to take photos during the performance, but did take one of the only set that they used for the entire play.
Our seating was very good with seats in the center section just a few rows from the front. We had perfect view and very good sound quality. I will definitely want these seats in the future.
The play was about the trials and tribulations of a Father during the preparation for a wedding. Of course, the bride, groom and family were also involved. This was a play with a lot of laughs and even a few tears.

Following the play, we were able to visit with the cast.

Next, we moved into the student cafeteria and enjoy a very nice selection of food and desserts. I still remember our daughters complaining about the food, but I thought this was very good. Perhaps, things can improved over a 20 year period of time!

I would recommend this play for the entire family. Check it out!

Sept. 8, Luncheon Program - Spittin' Image

Well, it’s September, so it is time for some fun times with "Spittin’ Image", the Swabb twins, Blain and Brian. They give is a great program of music and comedy this time every year.

We started with some very nice piano music by our own Grace Averitt. So, this was a concert within a concert! Grace is a good friend and always has done a great job as our pianist here at Washington Heights Baptist Church. Of course, it is also helpful when our piano tuner is her husband, Mark.
Listen to Grace

Spittin’ Image have always given us great and fun programs. We also have some of our best attendance when they are here. Brian and Blain Swabb hail from Greenville, Ohio. They have been performing together since they were wee tikes. Typically they perform somewhere around 500 times a year. Today, they had to leave promptly for another program in the Cincinnati area.

Here is a YouTube video of one of the songs that Brian and Blain performed. You can also listen to their Entire Program.
We completed our program with a very good devotional by an old friend of ours, and our church, Charles Wilkins, Pastor at Piqua Baptist Church. He talked about how we can serve our Lord, even into “Old Age”, whatever that is!

Listen to Charles Wilkins
Charlie and his wife, Caroline, were members here at Washington Heights when we were all part of our Young Married Couples Sunday School Class down in the area we now jokingly refer to as the dungeon. It is a small basement room below our old kitchen and bathrooms. It’s used for storage, these days. I think that was over 40 years ago! Charlie was also one of our star softball players, in those days.

Following this, we moved back to our dining area for a good meal prepared by Lisa and her team of cooks and servers. This time we had a meatball lasagna and carrot salad. We finished by a hot Peach Cobbler topped with ice cream!

Next month, we will be joined by another friend of Young@Heart, “Stan the Magic Man”. It has been a few years since we’ve used Stan (rumor has it that he disappeared during the disappearing portion of his act). I don’t know if that’s true, but bring someone along next month and see for yourselves! Now, don’t look up that old enemy to bring, just so Stan can make him or her disappear. Let’s be nice. Anyway, this may be the month for him to saw someone in half!

Join us and share the fun and fellowship!
